Early Lineage Episodes: From the Talking Island to Kent Castle—What Has Changed?

In this blog post, we’ll take a look back at the major changes and memorable events from Lineage’s early episodes, starting with the Talking Island and continuing through Gludio and Kent Castle.

Episode 1: The Talking Island

Introduced in September 1998, the Talking Island was the first area players encountered—it served as the birthplace for all Lineage characters until the creation of the beginner zone. The backstory begins when “Gunter of the Upright Heart,” a renowned knight from the Elmore region, falls victim to a plot and is exiled. He then teams up with the mage Gereng to run the Red Knight Training Camp on the Talking Island. Players take their first steps in Lineage as princes or princesses building their strength while evading the forces of the Anti-King, or as knights and fairies aiding them.
Because of this, at dawn, Black Knights—sent by the Anti-King Ken Lauhel to search for the former king’s heir—and their commander, Kurtz, would sometimes appear at the Speaking Island dock as part of an event. The monsters in the Underground Training Grounds felt quite powerful, and the battle against Baphomet, the boss-level monster on the second floor of the Underground Training Grounds, was an event that only the most skilled players could attempt at the time.
Characters like Celov, considered the most fearsome monster, and Pandora, the most popular merchant, were trademarks unique to the Talking Island. Although it is now just a part of the vast Lineage world, the Talking Island is the historic birthplace of Lineage and a “hometown” that evokes a bittersweet sense of nostalgia for many players.

Episode 2: Gludio Province

The Gludio Domain was the first region to introduce the “episode” format—a full-scale update system—and it was the site where those who resisted the Anti-King Ken Lauhel suffered a brutal reprisal. Later classified as a subsidiary domain of Kent Castle, this eerie region—commonly known as the “Graveyard of Skulls” and the “Field of Ghouls”—remains a wasteland formed by the corpses of residents left behind after their resistance to the Anti-King.
As this update marked the first expansion of the in-game map, many players were filled with anticipation as they boarded ships bound for the mainland; however, the first expedition was wiped out by ghouls shortly after setting foot on the mainland. The Gludio Dungeon, much like an ancient ruin, became more complex the deeper one descended; initially, only four floors were discovered, but it was soon expanded to seven floors, sparking players’ curiosity to explore further.
Notably, on the 7th floor of the Gludio Dungeon, an entrance to an underwater tunnel connecting to the second floor of the Talking Island Underground Training Grounds was discovered, allowing players to travel back and forth between the mainland and Talking Island. The Gludio Dungeon is home to a variety of boss-level monsters, making it a consistently popular hunting ground for players.
Kaspa, Walterzar, Merkior, and Sema—who primarily appear on the third and fourth floors—are subordinates of the Archmage Hadin and are top-tier mages. They are searching for Orim, who possesses magical power surpassing even Hadin’s and knows the details of Hadin’s dark past, which is why they are searching for him in the Gludio Dungeon. Among these four, Kaspa is the leader; Kaspa, Walterzar, and Merkior are male, while Sema is female, and they each exhibit distinct behaviors.
Orim hides on the 7th floor of the dungeon, conducting research on dark magic, and gained popularity among players by selling armor spell scrolls to fund his research. Additionally, the introduction of the Death Knight—who wields a lightsaber and unleashes powerful Earthquakes—and the Necromancer—who summons Monster Eyes and Ghouls—brought a new sense of tension and awe to players.

Episode 3: Kent Castle

With the Kent Castle update, siege warfare—often called the crown jewel of Lineage—was fully introduced. As the opportunity arose to capture the castle and elevate the honor of their blood clans, players began to view the Anti-King Ken Lauhel, their blood clans, and the very meaning of combat and siege in a new light.
In the early days, since the Guardian Tower had not yet been introduced, a monarch could only become the castle lord by breaking through the outer gates and seizing the throne within the inner castle. As various strategies and tactics emerged, feelings of trust, friendship, respect, and loyalty grew among clan members moving in perfect unison under the monarch’s command, while promises, trust, competition, alliances, betrayal, and hatred intertwined among clans, creating dramatic storylines.
With the Kent Castle update, the Taming System was also introduced, allowing players to raise wolves and dogs as companions. Raising these puppies—who became the best of friends both in real life and in the game—made gameplay feel more realistic, and the puppies that roamed the Lineage world alongside their owners back then may have reached high levels by now.

Episode 4: The Mystery of Magic

In this episode, the mage—another protagonist of the Lineage world—makes an appearance. As the mage, one of the guardian knights aiding Prince Poroju in his resistance against the Anti-King Ken Lauhel, enters the story, magic was fully introduced to the characters.
Magic in Lineage is broadly divided into White Magic and Black Magic. White Magic, which serves Ainahasad, the God of Creation, primarily consists of alchemical magic that requires materials and is cast through spells, harnessing the powers of creation, healing, and goodness. Black Magic, which serves Grankaine, the God of Destruction, has a shamanistic nature that involves sacrifice and inflicts damage on the caster, harnessing the powers of destruction, attack, and evil.
On the day the mages first appeared, the Speaking Island was filled with blond male mages clad in white robes, creating a dazzling scene; later, when the female mages appeared, female mages with long black hair wearing purple robes gathered, creating yet another unique sight.
With the arrival of the mages, an area to the west of the Fairy Forest—where orcs live in tribes—was also added. Known as the “Northern Forest” to the people of the Gludio Domain and the “Black Forest” to the fairies, this area features an orc fortress that attracted significant attention due to its siege-like elements, and clashes began between the orcs and the slash-and-burn farmers living in the surrounding villages.

Episode 5: The Fairy Forest

The Fairy Forest update fully revealed the fairies’ homeland and their unique way of life. At the center of the village stands a massive World Tree known as the “Mother of the Forest and the Elves.” According to legend, when Ainhazad created the elves, he first crafted this tree and then fashioned the elves from its fruits and leaves.
Near this tree, where the essence of the spirits is concentrated, elves can recover their health and mana more quickly, and since Guardians are always there to protect them, the elves enjoy a relatively safe and comfortable life. Additionally, the fairies have their own unique crafting system where they gather materials through foraging to create items.
Nerupa, the old spider woman who spins her web at the base of the “Mother of the Forest and Fairies,” uses the materials the fairies gather to craft fairy-specific items with the help of guardians such as Ents, Pans, and Fairies.

The addition of the Fairy Forest dungeon established a conflict with the Orcs, giving players a combat objective and providing plenty of fun.

Episode 6: Windawood

The introduction of the Windawood domain marked the arrival of the third castle in Lineage World. Long ago, when the demonic abomination known as Beres corrupted the Windawood region, Beres was sealed underground, and Windawood Castle was built atop the site. Consequently, the Blood Alliance that holds Windawood Castle becomes the ruler of that area while also taking on the responsibility of guarding the dungeon.
In Windawood, the village of Woodbeck and Silver Knight Village—a starting zone for knights—were established, increasing the number of quests available to knights and enhancing the game’s enjoyment. The desert, which occupies more than half of the territory, features an oasis where merchants sell goods; the surrounding area is frequented by Chaotic-aligned players, leading to constant battles.
Additionally, the Desert Dungeon was expanded to four floors, allowing players to encounter a wider variety of monsters in a larger hunting ground.

Episode 7: Valley of the Dragons

With the addition of the Valley of the Dragons, dragons made their full-fledged debut in Lineage World. This region, dotted with the remains of dragon bones, is ruled by Antaras, the Earth Dragon—one of the Four Great Dragons.
Dragon Valley has established itself as a hunting ground that offers a sense of accomplishment to players aiming for high levels, as monsters with higher average levels than those found in regular fields appear there. Drakes and Black Elders appear as event monsters, and the addition of various monsters such as Cockatrices and Harpies has significantly increased the variety of monsters.

Dragon Valley Dungeon and the Earth Dragon Antaras
The Dragon Valley Dungeon can be accessed through four fissures in the valley cliffs, and its interior evokes an atmosphere of boiling mud and flames, befitting the habitat of an Earth Dragon. Powerful and threatening monsters—such as Murian, Etin, Succubus, and Succubus Queen—are stationed throughout the dungeon, inspiring a sense of challenge in players.
In particular, on the 7th floor—the deepest level of the dungeon—the Earth Dragon Antaras appears, presenting players with the goal of becoming “Dragon Slayers” through its overwhelming power and charisma.

Episode 8: Giran

The Giran region emerged as a commercial city that fully incorporated residential and economic systems. As the first city surrounded by city walls, it brought significant changes in terms of scale and functionality; the commercial district consisted of shops and plazas lining two major streets, allowing players to trade various scrolls and items.
The atmosphere of a commercial city was further enhanced by the placement of two dwarves dispatched by the “Gate of Steel” guild in the plaza, and the addition of entertainment facilities such as the Colosseum and the dog racing track provided unique forms of entertainment—including PvP battles, celebratory shows, events, and races—in addition to hunting.
With the introduction of hideouts for Blood Alliance activities, the auction board reflected the triumphs and disappointments of monarchs vying to claim them, and hideouts soon established themselves as an essential residential system for Blood Alliances.
Giran Castle, equipped with double walls and multiple gates, enabled even more thrilling siege battles. The conditions for victory in a siege were also changed: instead of a monarch simply taking the throne, players had to destroy the Guardian Tower and claim the crown, filling the vast gardens and the area around the sacred site with battles between Blood Alliance members.

Episode 9: Heine

Heine is a lakeside city blessed by Eva, the goddess of water. The underwater city known as “Eva’s Kingdom” and the water dragon Papurion (Papriyon) added to its mysterious atmosphere. The Heine territory features a landscape where forests and villages blend harmoniously, centered around the breathtakingly beautiful Lake Lewis and Lake Reina.
Rosus Island, located in the center of Lake Lewis, remains untouched by human hands and is teeming with wildlife and monsters. Lake Reina and the Forest of Mirrors serve as natural fortresses protecting Heine, and crossing Lake Reina leads directly to Heine Castle. In the Forest of Mirrors, many adventurers lose their way due to monsters that mimic their appearance like doppelgangers.
Beneath Heine Castle lies the “Temple of Eva,” which enshrines the Water God and is protected by a powerful water barrier and the Temple Knights. Here, you can obtain “Eva’s Blessing,” which allows you to breathe underwater.
The old lighthouse near Heine is called the “Blue Dragon’s Eye” because, when viewed from the open sea, it looks as if the Water Dragon Papurion is glaring at you. If you enter the dungeon through the underground waterway surrounding this lighthouse, you can explore the ruins of the ancient underwater city, the Kingdom of Eva. Although massive statues and building ruins remain, evoking images of its past glory, the presence of the Water Dragon Papurion means you must always remain on guard in this area.

Episode 10: The Fire Dragon’s Nest

The Fire Dragon’s Nest has been added as a region offering a higher level of difficulty and more advanced content than the existing high-level area, Dragon Valley. Through this update, the dwarves of the “Gate of Steel” guild are revealed to be more than just warehouse keepers—they have a deeper backstory and a more significant role.
A revolutionary crafting system was introduced, allowing for high-level equipment upgrades—such as the Battlemaster Longsword and Dragon Scale Armor—crafted by the dwarves, and the Underground Castle was updated to become the fifth castle in Lineage World.
With the arrival of the Ivory Tower, new spells were added for mages, and elves can now learn elemental magic, increasing the value of both mages and elves. The Nest of the Fire Dragon Balakas is an active volcano located northeast of Dragon Valley and northwest of Giran. Characterized by treacherous terrain with flowing lava and sulfuric gases, it is primarily inhabited by fire-based monsters and offers an even more formidable challenge.
The lair of the Fire Dragon Balakas, situated at the very top of the Nest, is famous as a location that skilled players constantly seek out to challenge.

Episode 11: Oren

The Oren region is a snow-covered area and a center of magic where the Ivory Tower stands. The Ivory Tower of Oren is described as a place where the greatest mages in Lineage World gather, and where knowledge and research related to magic are concentrated.
The first through third floors of the Ivory Tower house magic-related NPCs and shrines, while the fourth through eighth floors contain sealed zones where malevolent spirits—summoned for magical research but now in peril—are confined. On the eighth floor, a boss-level demon, the embodiment of these malevolent spirits, appears, creating a sense of intense tension for players.
In the snowy plains north of Oren lies a massive dungeon called the “Crystal Cave,” named for the fact that its interior is clearly visible from the outside. On the lowest level, the third floor, the Ice Queen appears to greet challengers with powerful frost attacks.
During this period, high-level, high-difficulty hunting grounds—such as the Forgotten Island—and competitive content like the Colosseum’s Endless Battle were added, sparking a full-scale battle of pride as players vied for the top spot to determine who was the true supreme ruler.

Episode 12: Aden

The Aden region, which can be considered the culmination of Lineage, served as the capital and introduced a vast area along with new systems. The appearance of the Usurper Ken Lauhel and the Dark Mage Kerenis sparked conflicts and battles over the succession of the rightful heirs among the Blood Clans, and a crucial condition was imposed: Aden Castle could not be captured unless these two were eliminated.
Aden Castle, a symbol of the metropolis with its outer walls and majestic inner walls, is divided into four districts—the Commercial District, the Slum District, the Residential District, and the Harbor—each serving a distinct purpose. Centered around the capital, the surrounding area features the Forest of Mirrors, the plains leading to Weldon and Giran, the snowfields of Oren, the massive mountain range separating it from Elmore, and the endless sea to the south, offering a variety of terrains and content.
Around Aden lie the massive valley known as the “Scar of the Wind Dragon,” the Forest of Dawn, and the Twilight Mountains, where giant monsters—a new race—make their appearance. Deep within the Twilight Mountains stands the Tower of Arrogance; currently, powerful monsters such as the Zenith Queen, Sheer, the Zombie King, vampires, and liches have been confirmed up to the 50th floor. The top of the tower is shrouded in clouds, leaving its true nature and purpose a mystery.
The arrival of Aden significantly expanded gameplay dynamics by introducing the marriage system and the Blood Alliance system, and an event occurred in which Lindbior, the last dragon of Lineage World, appeared to threaten both the skies and the ground of Aden.
The arrival of the capital, Aden, served as a turning point in the completion of “The Blood Pledge,” and through this, Lineage World evolved into a world where players can experience battles and social interactions on a whole new scale.
