All living beings fundamentally aim to survive and, in the process, cannot help but act selfishly. However, among people, altruistic behaviors—such as small acts of consideration or service, or even risking one’s own safety to save others—are frequently observed. Among the various hypotheses attempting to explain this contradictory phenomenon is the “costly signaling hypothesis.”

 

Specific Example: Martial Arts Movies and Conspicuous Consumption

In martial arts movies, there are frequent scenes where, before a duel, a character performs dangerous stunts—such as smashing an empty bottle on their head or snapping a wooden plank in half—in front of their opponent. These actions are not mere displays of bravado but are intended to send the signal, “I am strong.” The key point is that not just anyone can imitate these actions. Since most people are unwilling to risk such dangerous feats, when a truly skilled individual demonstrates them, we place greater trust in that person.
In a similar vein, people display their wealth through external symbols such as clothing, watches, and cars. While anyone can claim, “We have a luxury sports car at home,” actually stepping out of a luxury car is far more convincing. In this way, displays that are observable and difficult to imitate—rather than mere assertions—inspire trust.

 

Conditions and Reliability of Signals—Information Asymmetry and Separation Equilibrium

When someone attempts to demonstrate their ability, there is often information asymmetry between the two parties. In other words, one party knows the other’s true ability, while the other does not. In such situations, the signal sent must be reliable and must be genuinely linked to that person’s ability. Furthermore, since it must not be easily imitated by anyone, it must entail a cost.
The key to costly signaling is that the cost varies depending on ability. For capable individuals, the cost of sending a signal is relatively low, whereas for incapable individuals, the cost is high, making it difficult to imitate. When this condition is met, only capable individuals send signals, and recipients trust those signals and adjust their behavior accordingly. In economic signaling games, this situation is called a “separating equilibrium.”

 

Explanation and Application of Altruism

According to the costly signaling hypothesis, certain altruistic behaviors are not merely unrewarded sacrifices but can serve as signals revealing an individual’s qualities or abilities. Actions such as charging to the front lines in battle, making public donations, or undertaking risky rescues send signals to others that “I am brave or capable.”
Consequently, such signals can lead to benefits such as social reputation, mate selection, or status within a group. If the signal is sufficiently costly and credible, observers will trust the individual’s qualities upon seeing the behavior, and the signaler will benefit as a result. Therefore, this hypothesis provides a useful framework for understanding why altruistic behavior arises in both evolutionary and social contexts.
In summary, the costly signaling hypothesis demonstrates that individuals can credibly display their abilities or qualities through costly behaviors that are difficult to imitate, thereby explaining behaviors that appear to be altruistic.
