What Is Ubiquitous Computing? Origins and Reality
These days, the term “ubiquitous” is commonly seen in newspapers and on TV. With the widespread adoption of smartphones—which allow us to access the internet and exchange information anytime, anywhere—the concept of ubiquitous computing, once perceived as a vague discussion of the future, has become familiar even to the general public.
“Ubiquitous” (u-bi-qui-to-us) means “existing everywhere at all times” and refers to an environment where users can freely access a network regardless of location, without even being aware of the computer or network itself. This concept originated from the idea of “computers of the future” proposed by Mark D. Weiser in 1991; he predicted that future computers would naturally blend into everyday life without users even being aware of their presence.
Initially, it was envisioned simply as computing and networks dispersed throughout physical space, but as digital convergence progressed, the concept expanded to include ubiquitous networks combined with IT technologies such as integrated wired and wireless Internet, mobile convergence, and RFID.
When imagining a future, advanced ubiquitous society, surprisingly realistic scenarios come to mind. When you wake up in the morning, a bed sensor checks your body temperature, pulse, and blood pressure while you slept and transmits the data to a hospital; when you sit in a chair, it recognizes your body type and adjusts to the optimal posture. Your car might guide you in real time along the best route to your destination, and your refrigerator might identify remaining ingredients and automatically order more before dinner. Scenes we used to see only in movies are gradually becoming reality.
The Dark Side of Ubiquitous Technology: Privacy, Alienation, and Dependence
However, it is questionable whether such convenience will always lead to an ideal society. A memory from my childhood comes to mind. My homeroom teacher, as if seeing through students’ actions with X-ray vision, would say, “I know what you’re doing at home,” and those words left an unsettling impression that invisible surveillance could control a society. A ubiquitous society carries the potential to turn such unease into reality.
The first issue is personal data leaks and human rights violations. Building a ubiquitous environment requires the collection of user data. When you shop, records are kept of when, where, and how you paid, and analyzing this data reveals your consumption preferences. Consumer databases accumulated through data mining lead to targeted marketing, and users may find themselves in a situation where their personal information—without their knowledge—becomes the raw material for someone else’s “targeted strategy.”
At home, devices connected via home networks generate large amounts of data. While it is convenient to have a refrigerator screen display a grocery list, expiration dates, and recommended recipes, if that information is uploaded to the internet or the home server is compromised, every move made inside the home could be exposed. On the streets, unmanned CCTV cameras capture people in real time, and in cars, black boxes installed to record accidents log location and behavioral data. This reality of “homes, streets, and cars without secrets” poses a serious threat to personal privacy.
The second problem is that ubiquity could create a new class of marginalized people. Not everyone has access to the same level of equipment and services. People with disabilities, the elderly, and low-income individuals find it difficult to enjoy the benefits of cutting-edge services due to physical and economic constraints. As more services—such as IPTV, wearable devices, and telematics—flood the market, the digital divide between “those who can afford them” and “those who cannot” may widen further.
Let’s consider a simple example. Some people can purchase the clothes a celebrity is wearing right on their TV screen; others search online to buy them; still others go from store to store in person; and then there are those who cannot afford to buy them at all. We cannot help but ask again whether ubiquitous technology is a force for universal benefit or a source of new inequality.
The third issue is the increasing dependence on machines and the resulting vulnerability. A lifestyle where everything is automatically adjusted to suit the user is extremely convenient, but if a system error occurs, the consequences can be catastrophic. For example, once people become accustomed to an environment where temperature, humidity, and lighting are automatically managed via a home network, their ability to respond to system failures weakens, which can lead to health or safety issues. People run the risk of unwittingly becoming vulnerable to external changes, much like “plants in a greenhouse.”
In this regard, the ubiquitous environment is often likened to a modern-day electronic Panopticon. The Panopticon, devised by Bentham in the 18th century, was a surveillance design intended to make prisoners internalize discipline on their own through a structure where they could not tell whether a central watcher was present. By offering the possibility of being monitored and monitoring others anytime and anywhere, the ubiquitous environment leaves open the potential for controlling individual behavior or for those in power to abuse surveillance tools. In that sense, the threat of “Big Brother” is by no means mere science fiction.
Ultimately, if those who develop and implement ubiquitous technology—along with policymakers—emphasize only the benefits of the technology while neglecting to prepare for the shadows lurking behind it, humanity may face even greater misfortune. In a ubiquitous environment, everyone effectively holds the sword of surveillance in their hands, and whether that sword becomes a weapon that infringes on human rights or a tool that protects them depends on how we choose to shape and institutionalize it.
Given the pace of technological advancement and infrastructure development, many elements of a ubiquitous environment are highly likely to become a reality within the next few decades. Therefore, long-term and careful social discussion is needed to determine the extent to which this technology should be adopted, and the scope within which it should be restricted and regulated. The top priority is to reach a social consensus that guarantees minimum human rights and privacy before implementation.
